Reds Trade: Jose De Leon, P - $600,000 in 2021 with arbitration for the following 4 years.
Rockies Trade: Nick Mears, RP - $500,000 in 2021, $600,000 in 2022, $750,000 in 2023 with arbitration for the following 3 years.
I actually am fond of De Leon and was excited about him being a Red. Nick Krall and David Bell have pegged him as an option for the final starting spot but, I think his future is in the bullpen with his higher walk rate and injury history. While Mears hasn’t been as highly touted on his way to the Bigs I honestly like him more than De Leon. He is going to have chances right away to be a back end of the bullpen type guy in Pittsburgh and his tools are off the charts. His spin rate is insanely high on his fastball and he hit 102 this winter. He’s been focusing on his curverball to give him a strikeout pitch which I love hearing.
For me it’s more about how I’ve constructed this team rather than who’s better long term. I think both pitchers have a good chance to be quality contributors but adding Mears gives me 7 high leverage relievers totaling $4.3 mill in between them which is something unheard of in the league.
If you’re wondering who I’m referring to: Cody Stashak, Andres Munoz, Bryan Garcia, Lucas Sims, JB Wendelken, Jordan Weems, and Nick Mears...combine that with Shane Greene, Tyler Clippard, Chasen Shreve, Robert Stephenson, and Joe Kelly and I’ve got a scary as fuck bullpen.
To the Rockies to confirm.

Confirmed. I agree that Mears is a formidable bullpen piece — that’s why I got him — but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to obtain the high risk/high reward of DeLeon, who may begin to fulfill his promise this year. Looking forward to see how this trade works out for both of us.
